Ning

Ning WebsiteRecently I found a neat little service called Ning that allows you to create picture albums absolutely free.

I have created several albums for my friends, family and so forth but what really got me thinking were the ideas that started popping up as to how you could use this for your niche markets.

Imagine creating a picture album for your niche market and then watching it take on a life of it’s own as people add and contribute to the overall album.

Hmmm…

Get’s you thinking doesn’t it?

The only downside that I’ve found is once you start the album, you can’t edit any of the pictures other than the ones you post. So if you have some bozo who decides to start adding irrelevant pictures (or even obsene pictures) you have no way of removing them.

There is probably some kind of fix for that but I just haven’t found it yet.

Anyway it’s a cool little resource and if used properly will do wonders for creating a viral picture sharing site.

Enjoy!

Hey there - thanks for checking out Ning! I’m one of the Developer Advocates, and you can reach me at yoz(at)ning.com.

Ning’s about a whole lot more than just photo albums - check out the many apps available on our Get Your Own page: http://www.ning.com/?view=xapps
Plus, because you can get at all the source code, you can customise them as much as you like.

As for removing pictures, you can do this using the “Manage Content” tool, available from the “Manage” tab in the bar at the top of the page. But keep an eye out for a completely new photo-sharing app we’re releasing next week, with tons of new features.
