The Cost of Marketing and Advertising
Marketing and advertising the old way can be excruciatingly expensive (as you’ll see in the video within this post).
It just isn’t feasible for the small business owner or start up entrepreneur to even think about marketing using traditional methods.
Unfortunately it’s rare for anyone to learn how to effectively market their products and services using direct response unless they learn it on their own.
It’s not taught in 99% of all business schools - I should know because I attended one of the best business schools in Canada and would say I use 5% of what I learned there.
So where does a small business owner turn for help?
Personally, it was through marketing mentors such as Dan Kennedy, Armand Morin, Alex Mandossian, John Reese and Jay Abraham who really gave me a tremendous insight into the world of direct response - online and offline.
Recently I came across a video that emphasizes this point even more.
Take a few minutes, watch the video and you’ll quickly see why learning how to market your products and services through direct response mediums is so crucial to the small business owner.
Without learning these skills, it becomes virtually impossible to survive.
What makes me laugh is the fact that these companies are spending hundreds of thousands and often millions of dollars in advertising and they have no way of knowing if it’s really working to help boost sales.
I’d love to sit across from them and ask…
How many sales did that big billboard bring you during the last week?
…or…
How many new prospects did you get from advertising on the taxis?
I think you’d be hard pressed to get a definitive answer.
That’s why it’s so imperative that the startup entrepreneur learns how to market their business using direct response marketing methods.
We can’t afford to waste thousands of dollars.
We need to know exactly how many new sales were generated from each marketing activity.
We need to know the exact cost of acquiring a new customer.
That way we can continually test and tweak our sales system so that we are getting the biggest bang for our buck.
After watching this video I think you’ll agree that the investing in education to learn how to utilize direct response methods is one of the most profitable places to spend your money… especially as a small business owner.

Hi Stu -
Your statement, “..it’s so imperative that the startup entrepreneur learns how to market their business using direct response marketing methods..” couldn’t be more true. Not only are these methods more affordable than the fancy billboards and advertisementsthese methods, they are measurable.
Right now our company is measuring the response of our multi-channel campaigns by using variable fields to drive A/B tests within one list: http://blog.l2soft.com (search A/B Testing)
