Working With Limited Budget When Your Technically Challenged

Q:  I am on a very limited budget and I am not very technically inclined. How can I overcome this hurdle without having to spend a great deal of money that I don’t have?

Use your creativity. You could find somebody who has tech skills that would be interested in working with you or exchange their services for something.

Don’t ask yourself the question can I make this work but rather how can I make this work? Perhaps you could do some type of a JV with somebody who have technical skills. Perhaps you could exchange products with somebody who has the technical skills.

There are sites like ELance.com, RentACoder.com, ScriptLance.com and guru.com that are all sites that provide freelance services to those that need them.

So for example, In the past I hired a programmer to help me with a particular element of my website. I have hired web designers off of ELance.com to help me design my blog and things of that nature.

You can typically get web-related or technical services provided for fairly inexpensive prices through those sites because you are working with people in places like Romania and India where the cost of labor is much lower. So there are always those alternatives.

Another great alternative which I recommend even more so than the one I just gave you is a website called oDesk.com.  The reason I recommend this site over the others is because the people that provide services through this website have been fully screened.

What that means is I think there is less than 25% of all the people that apply to be freelance workers for this site get accepted.  This is because they require them to pass a series of test before they are even allowed to provide any services to anybody.

The price is a little bit higher but again, it is still not as expensive if you were to find a webmaster or somebody locally to provide the same services. I think you are talking anywhere from $10 to $15 an hour.

With that service you do pay on a per hour basis but the upside is you also have the opportunity to see exactly what they are working on when they are working on it so you can track the hourly rate.  So oDesk is a better place to find higher quality service providers especially when it comes to technology.

So there are some alternatives and solutions for you. Do not let the tech side hang you up.
